"It`s a subtly inspirational story, where we root for Quoyle, even though we`re not entirely sure why." -- Kim Morgan, OREGONIAN
"A movie that engrosses, hypnotizes and clings to the memory long after the final frame." -- Rex Reed, NEW YORK OBSERVER
While working on location in Newfoundland, Kevin Spacey took part in a number of local initiation ceremonies including kissing a fish and drinking Screech (a local brew). The locals later accepted him as an adopted Newfie.
Fabulous. I`m even going to say the unthinkable (for me!): I preferred it to the book.
I loved the book, and so I couldn`t wait for the movie. I saw it last night, and it was stunningly beautiful. I loved all the outside scenes the best, especially the old house, and the trip to Gaze Island, where Quoyle learned about his past ancestors. I only wish the director had put in the school concert, and the trip to the city. I think they were very important to the love story.
If you are 40+ years old and you are either a newfie or have some relatives who are, you will love this movie! I on the other hand am 24, half newfie and disliked this film :( sorry kids but i tried my best!
enjoyed more than the book
Fabulous acting! Extremely well cast!
I think it as fabulous and tells about Newfoundland as it was, a little over done but good.
Thought it was it was great. Movie that was needed to start the year 2002 a good warm note.It was so nice to see a Movie that didn`t need foul language or violence to get your attention.
