A fantastically chilling tale of desire and mental breakdown. Portman is raw, intense and fragile in what should be recognized as her best performance to date.
This is the 1st time I've ever felt uncomfortable during a movie. It was confusing, sexual and grotesque all at the same time. well done!
I wouldn't recommend this movie except, perhaps, to serious fans of dance, for the dance parts of the film. The hallucination scenes were confusing, which I found frustrating. It seemed to me the writers were just lazy, and couldn't find a way of resolving the plot. Also, some of the hallucination scenes were very, very, gory--unnecessarily so.
Haunting performance by Natalie Portman.
Shows the dark side of the ballet world but is very well acted
This is definitely a movie that not everybody will enjoy. That doesn't mean it isn't a good movie, it just means it requires a certain perspective to really understand it. Even the infamous Natalie and Mila sex scene is far from being sexy if you understand the reason for it in the movie, though they are both beautiful women. At one point approaching the end, I was feeling a flavour of 'Fight Club' but on the opposite extreme: Women and ballet, instead of men and fighting. The best advice I can give is if you go see it, go into the theatre with an open mind--I found it to be a work of pure art as a result.
This movie is worth seeing, but only for the great acting by all the principals. The story itself is bizarre and unbelievable. I found it incredible that no one notices the state that the lead character is in. Why does no one see? Why does no one help? OK, it's an intense artistic world that the characters inhabit, but we seem to be talking about someone suffering from schizophrenia and clearly experiencing hallucinations. Because the movie pretends that no one notices how ill she is makes the situation seem unreal and prevents the viewer from becoming emotionally invested in the characters. Icky is how the movie left me feeling.
This has to win some oscars!! Intense! Great writing - visuals and music build intense 'edge-of-seat' anticipation.....
Great Movie! Great acting! Oscar worthy!
