Billie Holiday (Andra Day) is a jazz singer looking to unite the American people through her music. She gains the attention of the FBI, who see her as a threat, saying her song "Strange Fruit" is meant to provoke people and incite riot. They forbid her to sing it, but she's a big star and an artist who doesn't "cower to no Feds." When she goes right ahead and begins the song one night, they stop her mid performance and using her drug addiction as an excuse, send her to prison. When she gets out, she is more determined than ever to be a voice for Black people.
