Viola Davis explains how every women she has met in her life — from her mother to her publicist — has influenced the portrayal of her character Rose in Fences, for which she has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category. She says Rose embodies the idea that women should repress their voices and desires, which happens even today. Viola also talks about how her co-star and director, Denzel Washington, encouraged her to perform “big” during their rehearsals for the film.
