This film was stunningly beautiful visually and very reminiscent of Dogville with the plot being a being a play and the town being a set. I thought the storyline had an especially deep undercurrent once you looked past the typical Wes Anderson subplots, which I felt all joined up in the end, albeit in a very conceptual manner. I think the truth of the message of this film came out when Jason Schwartzman went backstage to speak to the director, played by Adrien Brody, who still had not conceived an ending for his play. Schwartzman expressed concerns feeling lost with the direction of his character… To me it felt like how we all feel as humans at times, asking someone, or something (ie God, what have you) to tell us what the point is and where we should go or what we should do. Brody’s response was perfection and lent meaning to all the other subplots and characters in the story.
Call it what it is, artisanal. Our theater was full of laughter. In a good way.
Seems like one of those movies which you either love or "hate" - I loved it, even if just for the comical scenes and the philosophical discussions, though I’d have to admit that I didn‘t get it in its entirety (which reflects the statement of one of the main actors in the black-and-white production flashback). Guess you have to watch it a couple of times to really understand the point it’s trying to make.
I spent the entire time, while I had my eyes open, trying to figure out what in the heck was going on. The few laughs that there were were about isolated cute things in the movie. But overall, nothing in the movie made sense. Very few laughs. I walked out of there having wasted my time and money. I would NOT recommend this!!
In a theatre with about 30 others who sat in complete and utter silence for the duration of the film. Not a single chuckle. I heard one loud snore for a second, which I don't think was me. My reaction was stunned incredulity. The first film that compelled me to ask for a refund. They said no, of course.
As a We Anderson fan, I can easily say that this is by far his worst move to date. He simply over Wes Andersoned it with a horrible script and poor story line. Plenty of big names in this ensemble cast that will regret having made this movie. I literally dozed off for a bit about halfway through. If you see it, you will be mad that you did.
Well, I’ve heard plenty of laughs around me, so some people must think it’s funny 😉 Yes, it’s an unconventional movie in the typical (?) Wes Anderson style, which isn’t everybody’s taste. I’m still wondering what the message of the movie was in the end, but quite a few memorable scenes and philosophical questions buzzing in your brain after leaving the cinema. Liked it!
This was not good
This is the worst Movie so far this year...... No reaction from anyone during that 1hr 44 minutes.. They should have paid me to watch that Movie...
I don't get it. I didn't laugh once, and I was needing a laugh! The alien's eyes made me smile. 2 stars because I love that era - reminds me of my childhood, and I love science geeks. II guess it was trying to be funny and entertaining, but just didn't get there for me. Bummer.
