Have seen it twice, will see again, repeatedly. Superb emotional revelation and realization of identity, even unto tears of empathy. To know The Iliad and The Odyssey not necessary to comprehend the redemption in this iconic love story, but knowing the epics deepens immeasurably the appreciation. The dialogue is fittingly laconic, the setting and props are period authentic (though nothing can replace the lost Greek forest of 3000 years ago), and the scenes and transitions bracingly poetic. Totally immersive. After the quietly subtle build to it, the controlled savagery of the climax satisfies like few films have. After the slaughter, the denouement of the reconciling couple restores calm. If you liked Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in The English Patient, you will love them here. Fiennes especially shows his extraordinary craft in moving from papal nuncio in Conclave to Greek warrior in The Return.
My pick for worst movie made in 10 years. Terrible! DEI silliness, cheap production, cheap sets, so many silly things that I could care less to take the time for this pile of feces that I won't bother listing them all. Any tv show or movie that's DEI and woke is always horrible.
Reminds of Kirk Douglas version.
