Great going until the absolutely terrible final episode. It's like Flanagan hit his head and suffered severe brain damage just before writing it. It was so disappointing to have a great series such as this blown out of the water by a wretched wrapup.
Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Shirley Jackson's great novel is more of a reinvention and expansion than the previous cinematic takes. Pretty great most of the way. Of the ten episodes of this miniseries, the sixth episode "Two Storms" was my favourite. It was riveting and emotional, and the final shot hit me like a ton of bricks. It was the ending of the series that disappoints. The whole series is tragedy upon tragedy, but the ending pulls a happy ending out of nowhere. It's incongruous and unearned. It feels tacked on. It's a betrayal of everything that came before, really. Still worth seeing, but I hope Flanagan isn't going soft.
Loved it
