Sprawling film at first impressed with its scope and some powerful scenes, but falls apart about two thirds of the way through and then it becomes apparent that this film is actually quite empty. It's a very shallow film masquerading as important art. It's a filmic mirage...a pleasing promise that evaporates into nothing. The finale in particular is the most lousy attempt at catharsis. Another reason to dislike the film is that the financial and critical success of this movie gave Cimino the clout to make Heaven's Gate, a bloated disaster that took down United Artists and pretty much finished any ambition Hollywood had for making art and steered the industry into hollow films made completely for profit motivations. Way to go, Cimino.
