Short film tie-in to The Beatles album of the same name. Written and directed by The Beatles themselves, which might have been a mistake? The direction is remarkably poor at times and merely competent at other times. Perhaps they should've hired a professional director? The film is very strange. It's the absurdity that amuses here more than any actual comedy. The bizarre nature of the film is obviously the result of the potent narcotics that The Beatles were consuming at the time. Perhaps they should've hired a professional writer, or at least done a sober pass on the script? All that said, for all of its bizarre nature and amateurish nature, this film is really entertaining. The sheer drug-induced insanity of this film comes off as refreshingly inventive. The film has a real energy to it. The Beatles themselves are always likable here, even when they're appearing in ridiculous scenes as wizards. And the music is great of course, from one of their best albums. Check this out, but try to watch it in an altered state.
One of the year's ten best.
