Terrific war movie. Not a deep statement. Not political. There's nothing that could be mistaken for reality here. Just a fun caper picture set during wartime. Eastwood, as always, is great. He's smart enough to have his stratospheric screen presence do the heavy lifting. Rickles is fun. Savalas keeps Eastwood on his toes with his own commanding screen presence. Sutherland's hippie role (as has often been stated) is an anachronism, but that doesn't matter because he's fun. Gavin Macleod plays one of the good guys but his role here feels more reminiscent of the heavies he played early in his career instead of the "nice guy" roles that would bring him later fame. Carroll O'Connor is great as a General that mistakes the greed of Kelly's soldiers for heroism. I wish O'Connor's character was in this more. He steals everything that isn't nailed down. See this movie. It's great.
