Leaden thriller is one of Eastwood's worst films. The story sucks. Malkovich's villain talks and talks and raves and quickly becomes intolerably tiresome. Russo is here to provide romantic subplot window dressing that prevents the film from developing any momentum. The problem with Russo's character is brazenly stated in the film's dialogue by Eastwood character! Badly matched stunt doubles abound. This Eastwood film was actually highly praised when it was released but most of that was down to the huge goodwill Eastwood was basking in after the triumph of his masterpiece UNFORGIVEN. But make no mistake, this is a mis-FIRE.
