Great movie. Depp is great. Del Toro is funny even when he's incomprehensible. Ellen Barkin is cast perfectly as The Backdoor Beauty. One look at her and you can tell she's a Backdoor Beauty in real-life too. That's why she was cast. Believe it and back that thing up back here, honeypie.

A mind-bending adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's acid washed landmark gonzo book. Las Vegas in the late 60s/early 70s was the purest distillation of America's greed, apathy, and desperation. Gilliam was the perfect filmmaker to translate this grotesquery visually, and the effect on the viewer is much like a drug high. At first it is fun and enjoyably wild, but the chaos leads to ugliness. Yellow sunshine became Woodstock's brown acid, and the hippie dream of free love and free everything was a bad trip the whole time. It can expand your view and whole reality if you let yourself sink into the film. I stopped talking my meds. I don't see bats but sometimes I feel like sherriffs are breathing down my neck like that scene in the film. Prostitution is legal in Nevada so there's something you can do if the David Copperfield show is sold out. They say slot machines have the worst odds but I say an ugly broke gambler trying to pick up a beautiful lady has worse odds. You have to sign a non-disclosure agreement stating that you'll never talk about all the sick kinky stuff you did in the city. Stay out of Vegas!

One of the most hilarious and asinine movies ever produced. My gut still hurts from laughing. Thank science for acid! As usual, Johnny demontrates that he can play any kind of character he sets his mind on since he doesn't care to become type-cast- with possibly the exception of his playing Capt. Jack Sparrow (although that franchise is probably ending soon). Because Johnny's character and the movie's plot are so bissare and over the top, I highly recommend watching it.

Based on Hunter Thompson`s memoir, this film is a sometimes hilarious and sometimes excruciating documentary on how too much drugs and alcahol can suck you into another world. The only reason I rate it a four is because maybe Terry Gilliam couldve focused on the the men`s brief life outside of drugs as well. You can also find Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci together in Sleepy Hollow.
