True and serious art: transcends the subject it deals with, while managing to remain completely down-to-earth. Superb acting, particularly by the children. Superb directing, particularly of the children (while at least a couple of adult actors are allowed to ham it somewhat). Photography impeccably matching the narrative gist of the film. Same for the music, the costumes and the set design. Pitilessly sharp and hard. Heavy to watch because sometimes it may feel as though it hits too close to home. I suspect that those of the public who should relate to it the most, would relate to it the least... or at least try to. I'm sure it will polarise the critics too.
