Will Poulter was born and raised in Hammersmith, London, England. He attended the Harrodian School where he began studying drama. It was his drama teacher Laura Lawson whom he credits for encouraging him to audition for Garth Jennings' Son of Rambow, a film about two English schoolboys from opposite backgrounds who are inspired to make a film based on Sylvester Stallone’s First Blood. Will auditioned and won the role, which earned him a British Independent Film Award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer.

In 2008, Will landed a role in the British sketch comedy series, School of Comedy alongside actor-turned-YouTube star Jack Harries. Will played various characters in the sketch comedy, in which youth parodied the world of adults. He stayed on the E4 series until 2010.

Will’s next notable role came as Eustace Clarence Scrubb in 2010’s The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third film of the Chronicles of Narnia series. The role earned Will recognition and numerous nominations for a variety of awards.

In 2011, Will starred in Dexter Fletcher’s BAFTA-nominated drama Wild Bill. It follows the story of a man named Bill Hayward who serves eight years in parole and returns to find his two sons abandoned by their mother. Will played the elder son, 15-year-old Dean, who has found a job to support him and his brother. The role earned Will another nomination at the London Critics Circle Film Awards for Young British Performer of the Year.

Having achieved success in the U.K., Will crossed over to Hollywood. His first role there was the 2013 comedy We’re The Millers , which follows a pot dealer’s (Jason Sudeikis) plan to create a fake family in order to help him transfer a shipment of weed from the U.S. to Mexico. Will played Kenny, whose fake family members are played by Jennifer Aniston and Emma Roberts.

Will also joined the ensemble cast of the 2014 adaptation of James Dashner’s young adult novel, The Maze Runner, in the role of Gally. Set in a dystopian world, the film follows a group of youths who discover they are trapped in a maze and attempt to escape. He reprised his role in the third installment in the trilogy, Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018). Will also starred in Alejandro González Iñárritu's Oscar-winning film The Revenant (2016) alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and in the 2017 drama Detroit.

In 2019, Will appeared in the A24 horror film Midsommar with Florence Pugh. In 2021, he played Billy Cutler in the critically acclaimed miniseries Dopesick with Michael Keaton and Kaitlyn Dever. For his performance, Will was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series category at the Emmys.

In 2023, Will made an appearance on the second season of the hit FX show The Bear. He played the character of Luca and reprised his role for two episodes in the third season. For his original performance, Will was nominated for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at the Emmys.

That same year, Will joined the Marvel universe as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). In 2024, he starred alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi in On Swift Horses.

In 2025, Will played the role of Shepard in the feature film Death of a Unicorn (2025) with Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, and Richard E. Grant.
