Date of Birth: August 22, 1967

Born Tyler Gerald Burrell in Grants Pass, Oregon, Ty earned a B.A. in Theater Arts from Southern Oregon University. He also attended The University of Oregon, while working part time as a bartender at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He completed his education at Penn State, earning an MFA (Master of Fine Arts).

Early on in his career Ty worked as a stage actor at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Ty also appeared on Broadway in Macbeth (2000).

After guest appearances on television series such as Law and Order and The West Wing, he landed starring roles on sitcoms such as Out of Practice, which aired from 2005 to 2006, and Back To You during the 2007 to 2008 season, co-starring Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer.

In 2009, Ty was given the part of Phil Dunphy on the breakout smash hit television series Modern Family. The show earned many positive reviews from critics, as well as a number of Emmy awards. Ty won a 2011 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and has also won five Screen Actors Guild Awards for his work on the show (four shared with the cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble and one for Outstanding Male Actor in a Comedy Series).

On the big screen, Ty has played roles in numerous films, including Dawn of the Dead, Friends with Money, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, The Incredible Hulk and Butter. He has also lent his voice to animated feature films such as Mr Peabody & Sherman (2014), Finding Dory (2016), and Storks (2016).

His latest credit is the comedy Rough Night (2017) with Kate McKinnon and Scarlett Johannson.

Ty married his wife, Holly, in 2000. They have two adopted daughters.
