Born in California, Todd Field's initial interest in film was acting. He started his acting career after graduating from high school. Moving to the Big Apple to study the art, Field started performing with the Ark Theatre Company as both an actor and musician (he was a budding jazz musician as well).
Field made his film debut as a crooner in Woody Allen's period piece Radio Days, followed by a small role in the teen comedy The Allnighter (both 1987). His first starring role came two years later when he landed the part of David Schreiner, an overworked med student, in Gross Anatomy.
While performing a number of strong starring roles in features like Fat Man and Little Boy (1989), Ruby in Paradise (1993) and Sleep with Me (1994), Field decided to take some chances behind the camera and direct. After completing studies at the American Film Institute, he started to write and direct a number of shorts including Too Romantic (1992), The Dog (1992), and Nonnie & Alex (1995) which received both the Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival and the Best Film prize at the Aspen Film Festival.
Keeping up his appearances in front of the camera, Field continued to rack up his acting credits with showings in Twister (1996), Walking and Talking (1999), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), The Haunting (1999) and New Port South (2002). Early in the new millennium he made his feature film directorial debut with the film, In the Bedroom (2001).
Married to costume designer Serena Rathbun since 1987, the two share three children. When not on set, Field still enjoys his music and has composed a number of songs for his films.
