Scott Thompson was born in North Bay, Ontario, and raised in Brampton. He enrolled in York University but was asked to leave in his third year for being "disruptive." After school, he joined the comedy troupe The Love Cats.
Scott made his acting debut in an uncredited role in Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie (1980). In 1984, he joined the sketch comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall, who made their way to television in 1988 for their comedy series titled The Kids in the Hall. Scott appeared in 105 episodes of the show, spanning from 1988 to 2011. He also appeared in the film Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996). He is a three-time Emmy nominee for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing for a Variety or Music Program.
While a member of the cast, Scott continued to book a variety of roles. He played a small role in Millennium (1989) with Kris Kristofferson. He played a lead role in the satirical comedy Hijacking Hollywood (1997).
By 1995, he began appearing regularly on The Larry Sanders Show as Hank Kingsley’s personal assistant, Brian. He played the character for 35 episodes from 1995 to 1998. He has guest-starred on a variety of shows including Star Trek: Voyager, The Late Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and Train 48.
In addition to his on-camera work, Scott also has an impressive résumé in voiceover. He voiced the character of Rube in RoboRoach. He played the role for 52 episodes from 2001 to 2003. He has appeared in animated series such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Simpsons.
Although known for his comedy, Scott has also impressed with his dramatic skills. From 2013 to 2015, he played the character of Jimmy Price on the hit drama series Hannibal with Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen. He also played a supporting role on Degrassi: The Next Generation in 2015.
In 2022, he returned in the Amazon revival of The Kids in the Hall. The following year, he played Dr. Pfeffer in FUBAR with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Monica Barbaro.
Recently, Scott was the voice of Ash in the big screen animated comedy-horror film Night of the Zoopocalypse (2024) alongside David Harbour and Gabbi Kosmidis. The film debuted in Spain at the Sitges Catalonian International Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film.
In addition to acting, Scott is also a writer. He has published a humor book titled Buddy Babylon: The Autobiography of Buddy Cole, as well as a graphic novel based on the characters from The Kids in the Hall titled The Hollow Planet.
