Ryûsuke Hamaguchi was born in Kanagaway, Japan. Following completion of his studies at the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he garnered attention for his graduate film, Passion, in 2008.

Happy Hour (2015) was his first film to gain international attention when it began to win awards at film festivals around the world, including a special mention at the 215 Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland, and as the winner of the Audience Award at the Nantes Three Continents Festival in France. 

His next feature film, Asako I & II (2018), was his first commercially made film. It won the ICS Cannes Award from the International Cinephile Society Cannes Awards and was a nominee for the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. 

His most famous film to date is Drive My Car (2021), which received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
