Born in Seattle, Rainn Wilson attended high school in Winnetka, Illinois. He earned an MFA in Acting from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1989 and began performing in regional theater productions, Off-Broadway, Broadway tours and finally, on Broadway.
Wilson made his television debut on several episodes of One Life to Live in 1997, but it was a role in the major motion picture Galaxy Quest (1999) starring Tim Allen that brought him recognition. In short order, he went on to appear in Almost Famous (2000) starring Kate Hudson, America's Sweethearts (2001) starring Julia Roberts, Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal (2002) and Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses (2003).

In 2003, he became better known to TV viewers when he joined the cast of the hit series Six Feet Under, for which he shared a 2004 Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with other cast members.
His fame grew when he was hired for the American version of The Office, starring as annoying nerd Dwight Schrute, again winning a Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Meanwhile, Wilson's big screen presence was being felt as he was given increasingly larger roles in major motion pictures such as My Super-Ex Girlfriend (2006) opposite Uma Thurman, The Last Mimzy (2007), the Oscar-winning Juno (2007), the comedy The Rocker (2008) with Josh Gad and Christina Applegate, the animated adventure flick Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) with Reese Witherspoon, and the action film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009).
