PAUL W.S. ANDERSON

Date of Birth: March 4, 1965

Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Northern England, Paul W.S. Anderson attended Warwick University where he achieved a first class film degree with honors and an MBA. He got started in film on his own, setting up a film cooperative in his hometown and worked on every aspect of film.

He then started to work for British television where he made award-winning documentaries and a controversial drama and was the principle writer on the successful contemporary crime series, El Cid. He began working on feature films in the early 90s, penning and directing the film Shopping. The controversial film was followed by his American debut, Mortal Kombat (1995) a year later. The film based on the fighting videogame became a hit worldwide, despite the critic's poor reviews, and launched Anderson into the spotlight.

Lightening didn't strike twice, however, as his next sci-fi film, Event Horizon (1997) flopped at the box office. He tried again with Solider (1998) but once again fell short.

Starting off the new millennium, Anderson went the videogame-turned-film genre and directed Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil (2002), followed by Alien Vs. Predator (2004).

He and Jovovich returned to the Resident Evil franchise three more times, directing Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017). In between the sci-fi/fantasy films, he also directed the epic Pompeii (2014).

After directing several episodes of the TV series Origin in 2018, Anderson returned to directing for the big screen with Monster Hunter (2020), starring Jovovich.

In 2009, Anderson married Jovovich, his fiancée of six years, with whom he has a daughter, Ever.
