NICOLETTA BRASCHI

Date of Birth: August 10, 1960

Nicoletta Braschi initially met Roberto Benigni on the set of her first film, Tu mi turbi (1983). Benigni not only directed and starred in the film, but co-wrote the screenplay with Giuseppe Bertolucci. Braschi’s next film appearance was in Segreti segreti (1985), written and directed by Bertolucci, but it was Benigni who won her heart. She has appeared in all of his comedies, and in 1991 the two were married. She has appeared in other directors’ films, such as Marco Ferreri’s Come sono buoni i bianchi, Marco Tullio Giordana’s Pasolini: Un delitto Italiano, Paolo Virzi’s Ovosodo (1997) and Francesca Comencini’s Mi piace lavorare (2004).

Her American film debut was alongside Benigni in Jim Jarmusch’s Down by Law (1986) and she has also appeared opposite her husband in Blake Edward’s Son of the Pink Panther. They co-starred in Benigni's La vita è bella/Life is Beautiful (1998), which won awards all over the world as well as three Oscars (including Best Foreign Language Film and a Best Actor award for Benigni). In 1998, Braschi won Best Supporting Actress at the David di Donatello Awards for her role in Ovosodo (1997).
