MARCIA GAY HARDEN

Date of Birth: August 14, 1959

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Harden received a B.A. from the University of Texas. She then went on to study theater at New York University and achieved an M.F.A.

Harden began working in theater in Washington, D.C. where she received two Helen Hayes Award nominations. She followed up her success in Washington with a starring role on Broadway in the play Angels in America, winning a Theater World Award for Best Actress, as well as Drama Desk and Tony nominations.

The Coen Brothers were the first to cast Harden in a feature film, giving her the female lead in their critically acclaimed film Miller's Crossing (1990). She went on to land more leading roles in Late for Dinner(1991), Used People (1992) and Safe Passage (1994).

On television, Harden received an ACE nomination for her performance in Fever. She also landed roles in telefilms like Convict Cowboy, Path to Paradise, Labor of Love and Thin Air.

In the late '90s Harden appeared in more mainstream films like The First Wives Club, Flubber, Meet Joe Black and Space Cowboys. But she continues to successfully divide her time between film (both blockbuster and indie), television and theatrical appearances. She most recently starred in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) playing Christian Grey's mother, the indie dramedy Grandma (2015) with Lily Tomlin, four 2015 episodes of the Emmy-winning series How to Get Away with Murder, and the comedy Get a Job (2016) with Miles Teller and Anna Kendrick.

Marcia's latest credits include Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and Fifty Shades Freed, in which she reprised her role as Mrs. Grey.

Married to Thaddaeus Scheel since 1996, she and her husband have three children—a daughter, Eulala Grace, and twins (one boy and one girl) named Hudson and Julitta.

Harden won the 2001 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Pollock. In 2004, she received her second Academy Award nomination for her role as a distraught wife who suspects her husband of murder in Mystic River (2003).
