Born in Bloomington, Indiana to the highly academic Margaret and Norman Webb, Marc Webb spent his post-secondary years at Colorado College, pursuing an English degree. However, it took only a single semester at school before he began pursuing filmmaking professionally. Webb created a name for himself working primarily as a post-production assistant, eventually contributing to the grunge-based music documentary, Hype! (1996).

During this time, Webb began directing his own shorts on the side, and it wasn't long before he was discovered by a music video producer. His first project in the medium, the video for Blues Traveler's "Canadian Rose," would begin a long and fruitful career that lasts to this very day, earning him accolades such as a 2006 Director of the Year Award from the Music Video Production Association. He has since worked with musical acts as diverse as 3 Doors Down, P. Diddy and Miley Cyrus, and most recently directed the video to Green Day's "Last of the American Girls."

Webb made his first real splash in the realm of fiction filmmaking with his short film Seascape, which premiered at the 2003 Aspen Comedy Festival. In spite of the short's success, Webb would not return to fiction filmmaking for six years. The result was the director's first feature: the breakout romantic-comedy (500) Days of Summer starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel as a couple with conflicting perspectives on romance. The film was a smash critical and commercial success, earning more than eight times its extremely modest budget at the box office and even landing a pair of nominations at the Golden Globes: Best Actor for Gordon-Levitt and Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

The success of (500) Days of Summer thrust Webb into the spotlight. Soon, he would surpass all expectations by being handed the reins to one of Sony's flagship franchises: Spider-Man. The reboot—which cast the very talented Andrew Garfield in the lead role and Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy—would give Webb the Herculean task of refreshing a franchise whose last installment was less than five years old.

Somehow, however, the man whose feature experience was limited to a romantic comedy that cost 30 times less than the blockbuster he was now responsible for, has produced a film that has become one of the most anticipated of the summer season: The Amazing Spider-Man. He then went on to direct the sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

His latest directorial projects include Gifted (2017) and The Only Living Boy in New York (2017).
