Date of Birth: August 19, 1965

Born in New York City, Kyra Sedgwick made her professional acting debut at 16 when she landed the role of teenager Julia Shearer on the soap opera Another World. She played the role for one year before heading west to study drama at the University of Southern California. After graduation, she landed the title role in a TV movie, Cindy Eller: A Modern Fairy Tale (1985). Her feature film debut came the same year, in War and Love. Sedgwick has worked steadily ever since, in both films and television.

In 1987, she met actor Kevin Bacon while they were filming the TV movie Lemon Sky together and they were married a year later. Her first big break came in 1989, when she played Tom Cruise's girlfriend in Born on the Fourth of July. Also in 1989, she won a Theatre World Award when she made her Broadway debut opposite Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst in Ah, Wilderness! In 1993, Sedgwick was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the TV movie Miss Rose White (1992), and shortly afterwards, she earned another nomination, this time, for her role as Julia Roberts' feisty sister, who kicks Dennis Quaid (playing Julia's cheating husband) in the groin in the feature film Something To Talk About (1995). A co-starring role opposite John Travolta in Phenomenon (1996) followed.

Sedgwick moved back to television in 2000, when she starred in her own sitcom called Talk to Me. Unfortunately, the show only lasted several episodes. In 2002, she starred as a woman who tries to escape from domestic violence in Personal Velocity. In Secondhand Lions (2003), she played Haley Joel Osment's irresponsible mother. The Woodsman (2004), about a pedophile who returns to his hometown and falls in love, finally gave Kyra and Kevin a chance to act together again.

In 2007, Sedgwick picked up a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama for her starring role in the crime drama The Closer, which debuted in 2005 on the WB. While on The Closer, she starred in the thriller Man on a Ledge (2012) with Jamie Bell and Sam Worthington, as well as in The Possession (2012) alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The talented actress' has continued working steadily in recent years. Her latest projects include the drama thriller Big Sky (2015), the dramedy The Edge of Seventeen (2016), and the sci-fi drama After Darkness (2016).

Sedgwick lives with her husband and two children, Travis and Sosie Ruth, in Connecticut.
