Kodi Smit-McPhee leaped into prominence in 2007 after starring opposite Eric Bana in the critically acclaimed Romulus, My Father. For his work in the film, Kodi received the Australian Film Institute's Young Actor Award and was also nominated for the Institute's Best Lead Actor prize. He also received the Best Newcomer award from the 2007 Film Critics Circle of Australia.

His work in the movie brought him to the attention of the filmmakers of the major motion picture The Road, starring Viggo Mortensen. Though a few hundred boys from around the United States and in Canada were considered, an audition tape that Kodi's father sent from Australia was the one that won out.

Kodi comes from an acting family. His older sister Sianoa starred on the popular Australian television show Neighbours. His father Andy has appeared in dozens of films and television shows in his native Australia and serves as his children's acting coach.

Besides Romulus, My Father and The Road, Kodi has also appeared in the Australian feature films Stranded and End of Town. On TV he played a recurring role in the Australian series Monarch Cove and in Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King.

Onstage, he appeared in Richard Frankland's theater production Walkabout. He also managed to land more film gigs, playing the role of a bullied young boy in Let Me In (2010) and voicing the lead character in the animated film ParaNorman (2012). In 2014, he played roles in Young Ones (2014), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and A Birder's Guide to Everything (2014).

He has also played Nightcrawler in the blockbuster films X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Dark Phoenix (2019), as well as the lead role of Keda in Alpha (2018).

In 2022, he received his first Oscar nomination for his supporting role in the Netflix film The Power of the Dog (2021). He plays Peter Gordon, the son of Kirsten Dunst's character Rose in the film. Both Peter and Rose are bullied by rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), then wind up living on his ranch when Rose marries Phil's brother, George (Jesse Plemons).

Kodi lives in Melbourne, Australia. Besides acting, he enjoys skateboarding and making music on his computer.
