Jon Foster was born in Fairfield, Iowa. He is the brother of actor Ben Foster, who claims their parents are "free-spirited, Vietnam-protesting hippies." The family moved around a lot when Jon was a child, as his parents owned nightclubs, bowling alleys and pool halls that were located all over the country.

Foster started out acting in a local Iowa theater before moving to Los Angeles. His onscreen career began when he was a teenager with brief stints in the television shows Get Real and Judging Amy, before landing a leading role in the thriller Thirteen Days (2000). He went on to complete films such as Life as a House (2001), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), The Door in the Floor (2004), and Stay Alive (2006). He dated his Stay Alive co-star, One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush. He made more television appearances in Life As We Know It, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Windfall, and acted in The Mysteries of Pittsburgh (2008), and Tenderness (2008). In addition to co-starring in Informers (2009), he will soon be seen in Untitled Roslyn Project (2009) and The Last Rites of Ransom Pride (2009).

Foster spends his spare time snowboarding, boxing, and rollerblading. He also plays guitar, bass and drums, and enjoys fixing up old cars. He shares an apartment in Los Angeles with his brother Ben.
