Gurinder Chadha

GURINDER CHADHA

Date of Birth: January 10, 1960

Born in Kenya, Chadah is an Englishwoman of Indian descent. She began her career as a news reporter with the BBC, and went on to direct several award-winning documentaries.

She began working on the big screen in the early '90s with the short, Acting Our Age. This was soon followed up by an award-winning full-length feature, Bhaji on the Beach, and two more short films. Bahji also received a BAFTA nomination for Best Film of 1994 and Chadha won the Evening Standard Award for Best Newcomer to British cinema.

In 1995, she directed Rich Deceiver, a two-part drama for the BBC, watched by eleven million viewers. After writing What's Cooking?, the script was invited to the Sundance Institute's Writer's Lab. It went on to be the opening night film at Sundance Film Festival.

She received worldwide acclaim with her hit film, Bend It Like Bendham (2003). Not only did it win awards from film festivals around the world, but it made stars out of the two young lead actresses, Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra.

Among her other achievements, Gurinder participated in the collaborative film Paris, je t'aime (2006), a film that not only includes many well-known actors, but also 22 directors, including Wes Craven, Olivier Assayas, Alfonso Cuarón and Gus Van Sant.

She not only directed, but wrote the screenplay for the historical drama Viceroy's House (2017), starring Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson. For television, Gurinder created and directed all six episodes of the British mini-series Beecham House (2019) for ITV and PBS.

Gurinder is married to American screenwriter and producer Paul Mayeda Berges, who is also the father of her two children.
