Greta Gerwig was nominated for the Breakthrough Actor category in the 2010 Gotham Awards in addition to Best Female Lead in the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards for her role as Florence Marr in Noah Baumbach's Greenberg, opposite Ben Stiller.

She made her mark in the independent and festival film markets starring in films such as Hanna Takes the Stairs and Nights and Weekends, which she also co-wrote and co-directed with Joe Swanberg. The film premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was the first major sale in the festival's history.

In 2011, Gerwig played a supporting role alongside Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher in Ivan Reitman's No Strings Attached, followed by a role as Russell Brand's love interest in the remake Arthur (2011). Greta then completed lead roles in the comedies Damsels in Distress (2012), alongside Analeigh Tipton and Adam Brody, and Lola Versus (2012). That same year, she starred in Woody Allen's comedy To Rome with Love alongside Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz and Jesse Eisenberg.

In 2013, Gerwig rose to even higher fame for her starring role in the romantic comedy Frances Ha (2013), which received widespread critical acclaim and follows a woman trying to achieve her dream of becoming a dancer.

Since then, she's appeared in the comedy Mistress America (2015), the romantic comedy Maggie's Plan (2016), the dramedy 20th Century Women (2016), and the biographical drama Jackie (2016), which follows First Lady Jackie Kennedy's life after the assassination of her husband President John F. Kennedy.

In 2017, Greta's second directorial effort was released. Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan, has received critical acclaim and numerous awards. Greta, who also wrote the screenplay, received two 2018 Oscar nominations, in the Best Achievement in Directing and Best Original Screenplay categories.

A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, Greta, who was born in Sacramento, makes her home in New York.
