GREGORY HOBLIT
Date of Birth: November 27, 1944
Born in Texas, Hoblit spent most of his childhood in Berkley, California where he completed his undergraduate studies at the local university. He then went off to UCLA where he studied film and television.
Starting his career in the field of producing, Hoblit took a job in Chicago where he produced several live and taped talk shows. Returning to L.A., he completed a number of projects such as a sitcom, several low budget films as associate producer, and a feature documentary which he both produced and directed.
Now experienced, Hoblit started to get larger gigs producing the miniseries, Loose Change, and the pilot, Dr. Strange. The exposure led to him teaming up with Steven Bochco, which ended up being a match made in Hollywood heaven. The two went on to produce the landmark award-winning drama series, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and NYPD Blues. By the turn of the century, he had earned six Emmy awards and a DGA (Director's Guild Award) for his directing on NYPD Blue as well as three Peabody Awards.
In 1996, he took on the big screen when he directed Primal Fear. The legal drama about a defence attorney trying to defend an altar boy up on murder charges featured Richard Gere and newcomer Edward Norton, who gave an Oscar-nominated performance. Hoblit followed that up with Fallen (1998) and Frequency (2000), but neither faired as well with critics and box office numbers as Primal Fear.
Hoblit is married to actress Debrah Farentino. They have a child together.
