David Devine

DAVID DEVINE

Born and raised in Toronto, David Devine graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honors B.A. in English before going on to earn an M.F.A. from UCLA's prestigious film school. He established his own company, Devine Videoworks, in 1982.

He began his directing career in 1985 with the video A Young Children's Concert with Raffi. The video went multi-platinum in North America. Devine's first dramatic project was the hour-long TV movie Beethoven Lives Upstairs (1989). The special won a 1993 Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program.

Devine continued on in this vein by producing six The Composers' Specials for children, and directing two of them: Bizet's Dream (1994) and Rossini's Ghost (1996). He then went on to produce The Inventors' Specials, directing the Einstein, Galileo and Edison episodes. In 1999, Edison: The Wizard of Light and Galileo: On the Shoulders of Giants received nine Emmy Award nominations between them, winning three, while Einstein: Light to the Power of 2, won a Children's Jury Award at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival.

This was followed by the six-part series The Artists' Specials for HBO, three of which Devine directed--Degas, Rembrandt and Monet. Devine made his first foray into feature films with the family comedy, Bailey's Billion$ (2005), starring Dean Cain, Tim Curry and Jennifer Tilly.

Devine lives in Toronto with his wife, Jane, and their daughter, Francesca.
