DARYL HANNAH
Date of Birth: December 3, 1960
Daryl Hannah's childhood interest in movies grew out of a lifelong battle with insomnia. As a teen, she played soccer on the boys' team and studied ballet with Maria Tallchief.
When this Chicago, Illinois native first landed in Los Angeles to attend UCLA and take up drama studies with the legendary Stella Adler, she realized that film producers were noticing. A striking, tall blond, she says about the attention her looks brought her: "One thing they do well in L.A. is smell out fresh meat."
After she attended the University of Southern California, she made her film debut in the Brian De Palma film The Fury.
As well known for her romantic dalliances as her leading roles -- she once dated musician Jackson Browne and John F. Kennedy Jr. -- Hannah¹s breakthough role was as the painted semi-mute android in Ridley Scott¹s Blade Runner.
But the film that really put her over the top came two years later and featured her playing a fish out of water alongside Tom Hanks in Splash. More recently, she has come to see the top-grossing film as a bit of a curse. Says Hannah, "Whatever role the public becomes aware of you in, that's you, period. I'll always be seen as a non-verbal mermaid. My manager is constantly being told, "She's good for those ethereal kinds of parts.' As if that's all I'm capable of."
"If you're in a movie like Splash that makes over $150 million, you can have five or six bombs before you have to kiss butt again. I've been at the butt-kissing stage for a while now."
In 1994 she won the Jury Award from the Berlin International Film Festival for Best Short for a film titled The Last Supper, which she directed, wrote, and produced. More recently she has been seen in critically-acclaimed films such as John Sayles' Casa de los Babys (2003) and Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004).
Hannah has used her star power over the years to push environmental causes and it has often landed her in hot water. In June 2009, she was among a group of 31 people who were arrested in a protest against mountaintop removal in West Virginia. In August 2011, she was again arrested, this time in front of the White House, for take part in a sit-in to protest a proposed oil pipeline between Canada and the U.S. Gulf Coast. In 2012, she faced jail time yet again in Wood County, Texas for protesting a tar sands pipeline by attempting to block heavy construction equipment. Hannah is also a member of the World Future Council and makes an appearance in the environmental documentary The Carbon Rush (2012) about the true costs of carbon trading.
