A modern-day scream queen, Betty Gabriel has established her career in acting, particularly in the horror genre.
Born in Washington, D.C., but raised in Pittsburgh and Hyattsville, Maryland, acting was not always Betty's goal. She attended Iowa State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science.
While attending Iowa State University, Betty did a bit of theater. After graduating, she moved to Chicago, where she started working as an actress and studying dance in the Chicago theater community. While working in the community, she met an actor who was playing the role of Hamlet. This meeting pushed her to attend Juilliard, where she graduated in 2014 with a Master of Fine Arts in Drama.
Betty’s feature film debut was In Memoriam (2011). She also had small roles in He’s Way More Famous Than You (2013) and Experimenter (2015) with Peter Sarsgaard and Winona Ryder. In 2016, she appeared in her first major role as Laney Rucker in The Purge: Election Year with Frank Grillo. That same year, Betty began her television career. She appeared in seven episodes of Good Girls Revolt and two episodes of the miniseries 12 Deadly Days.
The following year, she played a pivotal role in the Oscar-nominated film Get Out (2017) with Daniel Kaluuya. Betty played Georgina, a woman who had another person’s mind forced into her body. To prepare for the role, Betty watched the TED Talk from Martin Pistorius to help gain insight into the feeling of being trapped inside one’s own body.
Betty’s performance was praised by critics and was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture by the Black Reel Awards. She was also considered to be a contender for an Oscar nomination, although it did not come to be.
In 2018, she starred with Logan Marshall-Green in the sci-fi action horror film Upgrade, from director Leigh Whannell. That same year, she joined the cast of Westworld in a recurring role for the show’s second season.
In 2020, she was part of the cast of Defending Jacob with Chris Evans. The miniseries from Apple TV+ was nominated for two Emmys.
In 2021, she returned to horror in the animated film The Spine of Night. She was part of a voice cast that included Richard E. Grant, Lucy Lawless, and Patton Oswalt. The same year, she played the role of Sophie Brewer in the Netflix horror miniseries Clickbait.
In 2022, she joined the cast of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan starring John Krasinski. She came on in season three as Elizabeth Wright and stayed until the show’s end in 2023 with its fourth season. She will reprise her role in an upcoming Jack Ryan film that started filming in early 2025.
In 2023, she appeared in It Lives Inside. The following year, she played the character of Elizabeth Keckley in the miniseries Manhunt.
In 2025, she played a supporting role in the action-comedy film Novocaine with Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder.
