Amber Midthunder

Amber Midthunder is part of a new wave of Indigenous performers making their way into the spotlight of Hollywood.

Amber's mother Angelique, and her father David met while working together on the set of the 1995 Japanese film East Meets West. David is of Indigenous descent and Amber is a citizen of the For Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribe.

Before her career in acting, Amber considered a career in MMA. As a kid she felt that her parents, due to their experience in the industry, were pushing her to try something else. They worked out at a gym where there were classes for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. As Amber started to progress through the classes, she gained an interest in it and started viewing it as a potential career path. She also ended up teaching classes for children after a few years.

Her first two roles came as background characters in The Homecoming of Jimmy Whitecloud (2001) and Sunshine Cleaning (2008). In the years following, Amber would work in a variety of projects in and around New Mexico. In 2012 she made her first of two guest appearances—the second in 2014—on the series Longmire. In 2014 she guest-starred in two episodes of the series Banshee with Antony Starr.

At 17, Amber moved to Los Angeles to pursue more acting opportunities. In 2016, she appeared in the Academy Award-nominated film Hell or High Water with Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine.

In 2017 she booked a main role in the FX series Legion with Dan Stevens and Aubrey Plaza. Amber played the role of Kerry Loudermilk for 27 episodes over the series’ three seasons, ending in 2019. In the same year, she starred on the series Roswell, New Mexico, playing the character of Rosa Ortecho for 49 episodes from 2019 to 2022.

Soon after, she starred in her most notable role yet as Naru in Prey (2022). The film was a prequel and the fifth instalment in the Predator franchise. Set in 1719 in the Great Plains, the film follows Naru as she must go toe-to-toe with the dangerous Predator to defend her tribe. The film having such a focus on the Indigenous experience was important for Amber and it allowed her to truly connect with the role.

She was praised for her performance and was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

In 2024 she played Princess Yue in the live-action adaptation of the series Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix.

In 2025, she appeared in Opus with Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich as well as Novocaine (2025) with Jack Quaid.
