Allan Hawco was born in Bell Island, Newfoundland. He is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. He's best known for creating and starring in the CBC TV series Republic of Doyle, which was filmed in Newfoundland from 2010 to 2014.
Allan's career spans across all mediums: film, television and theatre. His first role was on the stage in a Shakespeare by the Sea production of Macbeth. Before diving headlong into acting, Allan attended Memorial University of Newfoundland where he studied business. He ended up dropping out in favor of the National Theatre School of Canada where he was one of 13 selected applicants that year out of a pool of thousands. He graduated in 2000.
Allan's creativity eventually led to him having the desire to create. He is the co-founder of the Toronto based Company Theatre and started his own production company, Hawco Productions.
He has produced shows such as Son of a Critch (2022-2024), Caught (2018) and Frontier (2016-2018) starring Jason Momoa.
Over his career, Allan has received numerous awards and nominations for producing, writing, and acting. He was the recipient of the Gascon Thomas Award from the National Theatre School, and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Canadian Television Hall of Fame. He was also nominated for Best Dramatic Series and Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role at the Gemini Awards in 2010 for Republic of Doyle.
In January 2025, his new crime series Saint-Pierre, which he co-created and stars in, debuted on CBC and CBC Gem in Canada, and on Plex in the United States.
In 2012 Allan married CBC anchor Carolyn Stokes.
