Since arriving from the Philippines, Rose Garcia (Eva Noblezada) and her mother Priscilla (Princess Punzalan) have lived at a roadside motel on the outskirts of Austin, where Priscilla works as a cleaner.
Rose goes to high school and plays guitar, hoping to one day become a country music performer. When she goes out with a friend to listen to music at a downtown Austin honky-tonk called The Broken Spoke, Rose drinks too much and doesn't get home until almost dawn, where she witnesses her mother being taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a raid on the motel.
Rose, who didn't know they were in the country illegally, hides out until things clear, then when she goes back to the motel to get her things, she discovers a note with the address of her mother's old friend Gail (Lea Salonga) on it. However, the two became estranged and Gail, who is now well off and happily married, lives in a wealthy suburb of Austin and is not receptive to Rose. With nowhere to go, Rose returns to The Broken Spoke.
