In 1910, Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) travels west to be a teacher in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town. Although she finds the people in Coal Valley agreeable, Mountie Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) seems determined to dislike her. He believes he was assigned to the town in order to protect Elizabeth, who is the daughter of a wealthy shipping magnate, and feels the situation is beneath his capabilities.
Before Elizabeth arrived, an explosion in the mine killed 47 miners. The women decide to make sure their children are educated so they won't have to do menial, dangerous jobs when they grow up. The women set up a school inside the saloon, after the church burns down. Abigal Stanton (Lori Loughlin) leads the other newly widowed women as they go to work in the mine when the mining company orders them out of their company-owned houses in order to make way for new miners. In the second season, the town is renamed Hope Valley, when the coal mine is closed.
