Thomas spends an entire day in a shabby Parisian theatre auditioning, unsuccessfully, dozens of actresses in preparation for his production of Venus in Fur, adapted from an erotic Austrian novel. Discouraged, the director is preparing to leave when an unkempt actress named Vanda arrives to audition. Although she appears sloppy and unprepared, she pleads him to let her audition and he gives in.
To Thomas’ surprise, Vanda transforms into a seductive and attractive heroine, the ideal incarnation of the character he wants to bring to life in the play. As his fiancée waits at home for him, Thomas falls under the spell of this mysterious stranger who knows the script word for word and begins a dangerous game of role playing and seduction.
