Uncle Silas (1947)
In Victorian England, heiress Caroline Ruthyn (Jean Simmons) is ordered to move in with her disreputable Uncle Silas (Derrick de Marney), who was once suspected of killing a man. Soon after Caroline arrives, Silas and his co-conspirator, Madame de la Rougierre (Katina Paxinou), discover that they are next in line to inherit the family fortune. At first, their schemes are relatively benign: they try to persuade Caroline to marry Silas' son. But when that fails, their thoughts turn to murder.
