Billie Holiday (Andra Day) was one of the most influential jazz singers ever, with a career that lasted 26 years. Her song "Strange Fruit," about the continued lynching of numerous African-Americans in the South, gained the attention of the FBI, making her their next target. They view her song to be in favor of the Civil Rights movement, meant to provoke people and incite chaos.
Determined to take her down, the FBI plan a sting, using her drug addiction against her as they send her to prison. The operation was led by Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes), an undercover agent with whom she'd had an affair. With everything she has endured with addiction, heartbreak, and the FBI, Holiday now fights not only for her rights and freedom, but also to give her people a voice.
