Fifteen-year-old loner Charlie (Logan Lerman), still coping with his best friend's suicide, is setting off on his first day of high school. Realizing his potential, Charlie's new English teacher (Paul Rudd) introduces him to literature greats like Salinger and Kerouac, inspiring Charlie to embark on some adventures of his own.
He winds up befriending two seniors, the quirky Sam (Emma Watson) and her flamboyant stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller). The siblings help Charlie embrace his teenage spirit, complete with sex, pot and lo-fi rock.
Although Charlie basks in his newfound happiness, it isn't long before he realizes it won't last forever, with Sam and Patrick's graduation quickly approaching at the end of the year. Burdened with the heartbreak of losing his friends, not to mention his new love, and a repressed family secret waiting to be exposed, Charlie fights to keep afloat and escape the depression that's threatening to pull him back in.
