Summer 1993
In the summer of 1993, following the death of her parents from AIDs-related pneumonia, Frida, 6, watches as the apartment she once lived in is filled with boxes, packed full of her parents' belongings. Saying goodbye to her friends, she is sent from Barcelona to the Catalan province to live with her Aunt Margarita (Bruna Cusí) and Uncle Esteve (David Verdaguer), who are now her new legal guardians. They have a four-year-old daughter, Anna (Paula Robles), for whom Frida now has to be a big sister. Living in the country is a challenge – the surroundings are so different to her home in the city.
Frida often considers running away, despite her aunt and uncle trying to do their best to bring normality to her life. Occasional family outings to a local festival or a swimming pool, cooking or listening to jazz in the garden bring them moments of happiness. Slowly, Frida realizes she is there to stay and has to adapt to the new environment. Before the season is over, she has to cope with her emotions and her parents have to learn to love her as their own daughter.
