In Paris, strange hand-painted symbols begin appearing on doors. At the same time, in the district of Beaubourg, town crier Joss Guern reads anonymous apocalyptic messages that refer, in a cryptic way, to the plague. Police chief Jean-Baptist Adamsberg establishes the link between the two, which he soon associates with a series of suspicious deaths. The dead were found naked and blackened in the marked buildings. He believes that the Black Death may return, spread by a mysterious individual. Adamsberg and his assistant, Danglard, work to solve the case.
