In the summer of 1942, Maurice Gutman breaks a leg during a fight. The boy, who is Jewish, is hospitalized in Garches, where Dr. Daviel diagnoses him with bone tuberculosis. Bedridden, Maurice writes to his family, unaware that during his hospitalization, a roundup of Jews has taken place in Paris. As his stay in Garches continues, the young patient befriends the other patients, including Samuel and René. In the care of the benevolent and protective doctor, nurse Véronique and professor Charles, these children discover with courage, hope and candor the harsh reality of war.
