François, a photographer, meets Carole, an actress married to a French director who spends all his time in Hollywood. At their first meeting, they become lovers. But Carole quickly shows signs of mental imbalance, and is institutionalized at a psychiatric hospital. Though he’s still in love with her, François keeps his distance. She commits suicide shortly afterwards. Two years later, the photographer believes he’s found the love of his life—Eve. But when she tells him she’s pregnant, François, fearful of becoming a father, asks her to have an abortion, but when he sees how upset she is by his request, he rethinks the situation and comes to accept it. He even goes so far as to ask her to marry him. It’s just then that Carole’s ghost first appears in his apartment…
