In 1930s Algeria, a nine-year-old boy named Younes has to move with his family to Oran when his father’s land is burned and seized by a creditor. His father has a hard time getting a job and gives Younes to the care of his uncle Mohammed, a pharmacist, whose French wife, Madeleine, sees the boy as the son she has always dreamed of having. Renamed Jonas, the boy is enrolled at a good school where he makes friends with a group of Rio Salado youths. A dozen years later, as conflict shakes the country, Jonah is torn between the demands of his people and his admiration for French culture. He falls in love with Emily, the beautiful daughter of a rich landowner, who loves Jonas in return, but a dark secret prevents the young man from giving way to his feelings.
