Belfast university professor Sandy Duffy (Conleth Hill) leads a comfortable life. He's a regular guest on a popular television arts program, and his one novel, though published many years ago, is still in print and regarded a classic. But Sandy has a bad habit of taking things. He gets a thrill out of shoplifting — but when Sandy is caught by security guard Robert (Stephen Graham), his life is turned inside out.
Robert doesn't report Sandy — instead, he lets him go after agreeing that they share a drink after work. Robert reveals just how desperately lonely he is — and that one drink turns into a series of meetings as he tries to turn Sandy into the best friend he never had.
Sandy wants to shake his new friend, especially when Robert shows up to audit Sandy's class, pushes his way into Sandy's social calendar, and finds ways to get close to Sandy's girlfriend, Lucy (Lara Pulver).
