Violeta Went to Heaven

During a television interview, Chilean folk singer Violeta Parra talks about her life, her career and her fight against social injustice. Born in 1917 into a poor family, she became interested in music at the age of nine and started writing songs shortly after. As an adult, she travelled the country to discover traditional music. During her first marriage she had two children—Isabel and Angel, both of whom also embark on musical careers. With them she toured Europe and the USSR in the mid-1950s. During this lengthy tour, the fiery artist lost her daughter Rosetta, from her second marriage. Through her son Angel, she met the love of her life, Swiss musician and anthropologist Gilbert Favre, with whom she lived a tumultuous relationship until their breakup in 1966.
