Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman), a member of Britain's elite, longs to free herself from the confines of her current life. To do so, she ventures out into the desert and on the path to becoming a political attaché. In addition to becoming well-known as a political diplomat, she becomes a prolific writer, world traveler, archaeologist, explorer and cartographer for the British Empire during the Victorian and Edwardian years.
