Just as she's about to get married, Shira, 18, gets bad news. Her 28-year-old sister, Esther, has died in childbirth, leaving behind a newborn son. Shira's wedding is postponed as the family copes with their grief.
When Esther's husband Yochay bows to pressure from his family to remarry, a potential match is arranged with a widow who lives in Belgium. She refuses to move to Israel, so Yochay will have to move, taking his son with him. Shira's mother, desperate to keep her grandson near, decides Shira will marry Yochay, so he doesn't have to move away. Despite living in Tel Aviv's ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community, where religious law, tradition and the rabbi's word are absolute, Shira simply doesn't want to marry Yochay. She finds herself having to choose between being obedient to her family and doing what her heart tells her.
