Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones), 17, is the only hearing member in her deaf family. She gets up every morning at 3 a.m. to work with her father Frank (Troy Kotsur) and older brother Leo (Daniel Durant) on the family fishing boat, then puts in a full day at school. She loves to sing, so when it comes time to sign up for an extra-curricular activity, she signs up for choir.
The teacher, Mr. Villalobos (Eugenio Derbez) immediately recognizes her talent and assigns her a duet with the most talented boy in the choir, Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). When Mr. V persuades Ruby and Miles to audition for Berklee School of Music, Ruby agrees. But it soon becomes clear to her that her mother (Marlee Matlin) doesn't want her to go, and unless Ruby helps out on the boat, her father and brother won't be allowed on the water to fish, because of safety issues when no one on board can hear the horns of other boats around them, the radio on the boat when there's an alert, or the Coast Guard when they approach.
Desperate to get away from the fishing business and start her own life, Ruby is torn between her love of music and the obligations she feels to her family.
